Exam News - Certificate in Railway Control Engineering Fundamentals and Advance Diploma of Railway Control Engineering 

This page will be kept up-to-date with information for Candidates and their supporters for the IRSE Professional Examination

 

October 2023 exam

The exam team are starting to prepare for the October 2023 exam - this will take place on Saturday 7 October and bookings are now open until 31 July for all candidates.

Candidates will be able to sit either the Certificate (module A) or between one and 3 of Modules B to D.

  • Candidates for the Certificate (module A) do not need to be IRSE members.
  • Those wishing to sit Modules B, C and/or D must be fully paid-up members (at any grade) and have previously passed an exam module.

Candidates for the Certificate (module A) exam are asked to note that the syllabus and essential reading list have been updated - please see Certificate (module A) reading list page for further details.


We can confirm the following details for the October 2023 exam:

  • exam day is Saturday 7 October 2023 for all candidates
  • fees are GBP £120 for Certificate candidates and GBP £150 per module for Modules B, C and D candidates
  • The updated Certificate essential reading list is available on the essential reading list page
  • All candidates who are IRSE members have full access to the module B study resourcesmodule C study resources and module D study resources pages
  • All exams in October 2023 are closed book, so candidates must not have any study material to hand during their exam(s)
  • All exams will be held remotely in October 2023
    • Candidates will need access to a computer / laptop with internet connection and (integrated or separate) webcam
    • Candidates will be monitored through remote proctoring (invigilation) software using SmowlTech - candidates must ensure that their firewall / computers can open this software
    • Candidates for modules B, C and D will have their answers checked by anti-plagiarism software
  • Candidates will be able to book timeslot(s) to suit their timezone and commitments
    • Certificate (Module A) - 90 minute exam - timeslots will be starting at 06:00 UTC, 08:00 UTC, 10:00 UTC, 12:00 UTC and 14:00 UTC
    • Those wishing to sit one of modules B, C or D - 90 minutes plus reading and upload time - timeslots will be starting at 06:00 UTC, 08:00 UTC, 10:00 UTC, 12:00 UTC and 14:00 UTC
    • Those wishing to sit two of the modules B, C and/or D - each 90 minutes plus reading and upload time with half hour break between each module - timeslots will be starting at 05:00 UTC, 06:00 UTC, 08:00 UTC, 10:00 UTC, 12:00 UTC and 14:00 UTC
    • Those wishing to sit all three of the modules B, C and D - 90 minutes plus reading and upload time with half hour break between each module - timeslots will be starting at 05:00 UTC, 06:00 UTC, 08:00 UTC, 10:00 UTC, 12:00 UTC and 14:00 UTC

March 2023 exam

Candidates have now been sent their results by email and their certificates are in the post.  Those who have failed (near miss and fail grades) have been given feedback on their performance by learning objective.

October 2022 exam

All candidates have now been informed of their results, and all successful candidates who have passed their Advanced Diploma in Railway Control Engineering have had this confirmed and their certificates will be sent shortly.

IRSE Council will be presented with the full set of results at their next meeting in March and successful results were published in May's IRSE News.

Future IRSE exams

Future exams are expected to be held in early March (for Certificate (module A) only) and early October (for Certificate (module A) or Modules B, C and/or D) every year.

Due to planned IT maintenance, bookings for March 2024 Certificate (module A) will open in January 2024.


The ruleset is likely to remain for future exams, that is:

  • Candidates for the Certificate (module A) do not need to be IRSE members
  • For October exams - Candidates will be able to sit either the Certificate (module A) or between one and 3 of Modules B to D
  • For October exams - Those candidates wishing to sit Modules B, C and/or D must be fully paid-up members (at any grade) and have previously passed an exam module

Potential candidates interested in taking modules B, C and/or D are encouraged to apply to become members of IRSE as soon as possible so that they can gain access to the full suite of exam study material
